ROADWAY DESIGN PROJECTS

Schmidt Engineering & Surveying Inc. has a long history working on development projects in the City of Topeka and Shawnee County since 1963 working with the Public Works Department of the City of Topeka and Shawnee.

Schmidt Engineering & Surveying has added to the technical engineering and surveying staff by Mr. Steve Overman P.L.S. and Michael North P.E.  Both people have a long history working with KDOT, MoDOT, and with Cities and Counties in Kansas and Missouri.  Mr. North has design and managed a number of projects over the past 20 years involving projects on both the Kansas and Missouri side.  Listed below are a number of projects Mr. North has worked on with KDOT Bureau of Design and Bureau of Local Projects and has experience working on projects in Missouri.

Kansas Projects

  • 119th and I-35 Interchange Project KDOT and City of Olathe, KS – Project manager on preliminary and final design of a diamond interchange in Johnson County with a re-alignment of I-35.  Included final design of secondary and collector feeding the interchanged Approximate Construction Cost $27 million.

  • 151st Street Johnson County, KS Johnson County Public Works and KDOT Bureau of Local Projects.  Project manager/Project engineer on151st Street from Old 56 highway to 0.2 miles west of Gardner Road.  Project included upgrading two-lane asphalt with no shoulders with open ditch drainage and CMP crossroad drainage structures.  The improvements to the road were to improve the cross road drainage and to provide an eight foot shoulders.

  • McCall Road at US 24, McCall Road Tuttle Creek and Leavenworth at Tuttle Creek Blvd. In Manhattan, Kansas. Project manager/Project Engineer for two projects with the City of Manhattan.  Improvements to McCall road were to provide left turn lanes on US-24 and McCall Road, to provide right turn lanes on US 24 and install traffic signals.  The other project was to provide additional access across a drainage channel to relieve traffic at Tuttle Creek at Blue bonnet

  • 15th Street Liberal, KS Bureau of Local Projects Project Engineer for taking plans field check plans to final plans submittal.  Provided a cost estimates and contract special provisions.  The construction cost estimate was $1.4 million

  • US 83 Bypass – Liberal Kansas Project Engineer for City of Liberal and KDOT Bureau of Local Projects.  Taking over as project Engineer of a field check set of plans to final plan submittal.  Submittal includes right of way plans, legal descriptions, storm sewers, earthwork, concrete pavement, asphalt pavement and curb and gutter.

  • I-135 Reconstruction - McPherson, Kansas.  Project Engineer on project for KDOT bureau of Design to bring I-135 to current standards for safety and design speed.  Responsible for a hydraulic study for all cross road drainage structures to determine if they met current design standards for capacity, and to determine if they need repair.  Acceleration and deceleration lanes at diamond interchanges, upgraded to meet KDOT and federal requirements.  Modified vertical grades to meet vertical clearances at bridge overpasses.

Missouri Projects

  • Colbern Road Phase IV - Jackson County Public Works  -Route 7 to Buckner Tarsney Road.  Two lane asphalt road with no shoulders and open ditch drainage.  Widen to 4 lane asphalt road with curb and gutter and enclosed storm sewer system. Design issue was to use as much of the existing pavement as possible. Estimated Construction cost $5-6 million.  Project not built due to construction funding.

  • Harry Truman Drive – Grandview, MO from 125th Street to Crystal Ave.  Two lane roadway on new alignment.  Project included asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, enclosed storm sewer system, specifications, R/W, legal descriptions  Estimated cost $2.3 million.

  • RD Mize – City of independence, MO from 1000fet east of Selsa road to south of Eureka Road   Widen an existing two lane asphalt roadway to a three lanes with sidewalks, curb and gutter, enclosed storm sewer system, specifications, right –of-way public hearings.  Project let in May of 2009 Construction cost $1.45 million. MoDOT STP funding was used for this project.

  • 39th Street – City of Independence, MO from Noland Road to Crysler.  Widen a two lane asphalt street to a three lane street with curb and gutter enclosed storm sewer system.  Public meeting were held and STP funding was used.

  • North Oak Trafficway – Kansas City, MO Public Works.  Widen an existing 2-lanes asphalt street with open ditch drainage to a 4 lane street with curb and gutter and enclosed storm sewer system.  STP funding from MoDOT was used.  Project included R/W, public meeting, horizontal and vertical alignment modification Phase I environmental review.  Managed a number of sub-consultants due to minority requirements set by KCMO.

  • Route 7 for MoDOT District 4 Project Manager for grading, paving, curb and gutter, storm sewer, traffic signal upgrades, addition of two lanes, raised median and continuous or protected left-turn lanes for 1.5 miles of Route 7 from Moreland school road to Wyatt Road.

  • Bridge Replacement – MoDOT Replacement of 3 bridges over small streams in Lafayette County, MO.  Project Manager for three projects to replace bridges on Route AA and Route NN located off Route 23 and Route MM located off Route 13.  The project on Route NN was a Triple box structure and the other bridges were three span bridges.  The approach roadways were reconstructed to match the new bridges.  Projects included public meeting, horizontal and vertical alignments, cost estimates and specifications, traffic control plans.
